Three out of four people will develop hemorrhoids at some time during their lives. Despite the common perception that hemorrhoids treatment requires painful surgery, the reality is that the majority can be treated with a fast, simple office procedure that has taken the fear out of hemorrhoid treatment.

Hemorrhoids are swelling in the rectum or anal area that may protrude through the anus upon straining. They usually contain enlarged veins and are most common in people over the age of 50.
There are two types of hemorrhoids- - Internal, which develop inside the anus with symptoms of bleeding during bowel movements or protrusion through the anus upon straining. External hemorrhoids develop around the anus and can be quite painful especially if a blood clot develops.

Although the exact cause of hemorrhoids is unknown, a number of factors are acknowledged to contribute to hemorrhoidal disease including:

  • Aging
  • Chronic constipation or diarrhea
  • Pregnancy
  • Heredity
  • Faulty bowel function due to overuse of laxatives, enemas or straining during bowel movements
  • Spending long periods of time on the toilet. (e.g. reading)
Internal Hemorroid
IRC Procedure

Infrared photocoagulation (IRC) or coagulation therapy, is available to patients who otherwise might first turn to traditional hemorrhoid surgery.
This minimally invasive, out-patient, medical procedure is fast, well tolerated and remarkably complication-free. A small probe is placed above the uses an intense and short beams of infrared light are applied.
The infrared light quickly coagulates the vessels that provide the hemorrhoids with blood, causing them to shrink and recede. Shrinking of the hemorrhoid tissues may take a few weeks.
While individual sensitivity varies, the majority of patients report feeling a brief sensation of heat, but not acute pain. Local anesthesia usually is NOT required.

Typically there are no post-treatment effects. Most patients return to their normal routines the same day. There may be a slight bleeding for a few days. Heavy lifting or straining should be avoided and aspirin should not be taken for a few days.

Your doctor at Tidewater Surgical Specialists will establish the number of treatments required based on the severity of your symptoms, locations of the hemorrhoids, and your individual response to treatment.

This procedure is covered by many health insurance programs.
Millions of patients have been treated with coagulation therapy and generally the hemorrhoids do not reoccur after the procedure.
Prevention should also include a sensible diet, moderate exercise and proper bowel habits.
